(Grandfather came from Pakur to Kankurgachi

Bringing with him a pot full of catfish.)

At that time, most people used to travel on foot. On the way grandfather took a dip in the pond, picked up his pot of fish and made his way to Kankurgachi (that is the location of the Miley Mishey organisation). He failed to notice that at that very moment a snake charmer with a pot similar to his had also come to bathe in the pond. After reaching Kankurgachi, when grandfather’s pot was opened in the kitchen, a poisonous hooded cobra sprang up.

‘Dhitang dhitang boley, madoley tan toley’ (Drumming dhitang dhitang on the beats of the madol) aptly recaptures the ambience of the Santhal tribes. In my view the song could have elements of kankani folk songs. I do not find any Caribbean flavours in this song though it is widely claimed to have Caribbean origin. Salilda could have cleared the confusion. He told his favourite juniors like Prabirda, Analda and Abhijitda that the tune was of Western origin. On Salilda’s insistence they all composed songs based on this tune.

Salilda used to call the I.P.T.A. his university of learning rural and folk rustic music. The movement of this song is like the Konkani folk songs. Many Konkani folk songs have a distinct Portuguese influence. The movement of the orchestra also has Konkani flavour. The tune of the song, on the other hand, is likened to Carribean or Latin American songs. Salilda told that to the famous singer Satinath Mukhopadhyay. Goa was a Portuguese colony, Portuguese influence on Kankani music is well-known. Salilda had used Konkani tunes for many of his songs for the Sachin Shankar ballet and in his film music. ‘Dhitang dhitang boley (On the beats of dhitang dhitang) can be grouped with them. Khaledda had also said that this song is akin to a Kankani folk song.

The optimistic song, harbinger of new dreams captivates both young and old listeners with its hypnotic words and swinging rhythm. The song invites all of us to come together and build a golden nation. This song stands alone as the sweetest, simplest song that is absolutely perfect for children to dance to. This song is an evergreen treasure. Even in this politically fractured state, children of all parties sing and dance to this song. Its appeal is irresistible.

The songs presented by the Hemanta-Salil duo complemented each other and starting from 1949 they, created immortal songs over three decades.

‘Pathey ebar namo saathi’

(Let’s come down to the street, friend)

This song was released during the Pujas in 1954 in the voice of Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. This song is unforgettable and yet I feel that the song has not received its due recognition. I know it sounds like oxymoron. It was written on the occasion of the teachers’ strike.

The song is of four stanzas. The lyrics glides fluidly from stanza to stanza, urging all of us to leave behind the history of wars and conflicts, and unite in the grand forum of world peace. The words, beats and tune blend harmoniously together.
